Obscurus Lupa, You know, for a year and a half now I’ve been...
You know, for a year and a half now I’ve been hearing a lot of stuff like this, and I’d be lying if I said it didn’t get to me. It makes me hesitant to want to do anything with my boyfriend, and the only reason people want me to feel bad about this is because I’m in the public eye. As if that gives anyone the right to tell me how to live my life.
Because it’s not the videos. I do a main show, Obscurus Lupa Presents, weekly. Anything else is in-between, but as for my main show, I’m doing that every week. You want to know how many episodes Phelan has been in of that show since we started going out? Four. Out of 51. You want to know how many times we mentioned we’re going out in my series? Zero. That leaves 47 episodes where you don’t have to think about who I’m dating, where I provide comedic analysis for 20+ minutes, plus 55 previous to when we were dating. In fact, in every one of those other videos, I don’t even mention Phelan or my dating status. Okay, maybe in one of the American Ninjas I mentioned his name. Actually, in two of those four episodes he was in, he was playing a character. I’m not sure if you read into what me and Shredder had, but I can assure you his heart belongs to another.
Now I’m not a math whiz or anything, but I’d say 4 out of 51 isn’t a bad ratio.
Now, we’ve done a few crossovers and miscellaneous videos in between. But that’s exactly that. Sometimes we do want to do fun videos together, but I don’t use that as an excuse to take away from my regular show. You still get the same Obscurus Lupa Presents, and if you’d like occasionally there’s a bonus video we do together. If that’s not your cup of tea, fine, like I said, you aren’t being deprived of anything I wouldn’t already be doing.
Really, the ones where you can tell we’re going out is the vlogs and the let’s plays, because those aren’t scripted or in character. And I’m sorry, but I’m not playing a character in a shrek vlog. I’m not pushing my relationship on anyone, I’m actually just living my life. If that’s okay with you. I promise I won’t be hurt if you skip out on the let’s eat videos because you don’t want to know if Phelan and I are dating. I won’t put a gun to your head. Like I said, you can enjoy the other 47 videos where Phelan isn’t even mentioned.
I keep hearing this a lot, like we want everyone to know we’re going out, but I’m not sure how I’m doing that. I considered stopping making out with Phelan profusely in the videos, but then I figured you guys wouldn’t know we were going out and I’d stop hearing complaints from a bunch of entitled man-children.
Really, it’s not the videos. Because I’m producing just as much content without Phelan as I was before, and I try my damnedest to provide humorous, insightful commentary on a movie. I also happen to date Phelan, and I love him very much. I can’t do anything outside of breaking up with him to get people to be okay with that, and I’m not sure why exactly I’m not allowed to date the person I want to. I’m not shoving it out there so everyone knows, but I’m not going about it in secret either. I’m d-list famous, and I have a boyfriend. Sucks to be you.
So if it’s not the videos, the only conclusion I can come to is that everyone is reading into what we do and seeing something that isn’t there. And I’m not saying that we haven’t done videos where we’re a couple or that it’s been in secret, but I have never once written that into my main show. I talk about movies.
Let me ask you this: Are you upset because we genuinely push our relationship on people, or because you just don’t like knowing about it?
I don’t think people are jealous. There’s lots of reasons. Some people don’t like the idea of their internet comedian changing, so they want to find some other reason for it. Call it the Yoko Ono Factor. There have been videos on youtube dedicated to why I’ve ruined Phelan’s videos, just for existing. They say his voice has changed because of my influence, and vice versa. And I can’t help but think, if we had been secret about our relationship, that people wouldn’t feel this way. And some people just hate my guts and wish I’d disappear. And maybe some people genuinely do feel encroached upon by our relationship, but I can absolutely assure you that I don’t need people to know that I’m dating Phelan to feel confident in my work. It’s just part of what comes with me sometimes, since he is a part of my life.
And honestly, it makes me feel bad to be involved with his work sometimes. Like I’m getting involved with the boys club. And it shouldn’t be that way. I’d also love to know how making a relationship public is “unprofessional.” “Because I don’t want to know” is not an acceptable answer.
People feel like they’re entitled to dictate how I live my life because I’m in the public eye. But “fan demand” does not apply to who I go out with. This is not something I incorporate into Obscurus Lupa Presents, and if someone has an example I’d love to be proven wrong. Constructive criticism is fantastic, but it does not mean “the customer is always right.” I got out of retail a long time ago, people. Just because you watch my videos does not make me your property or my personal life part of my character (as loose of a character as it may be).
So with all due respect to the anon, “get over it” pretty much sums this up.
